Champagne Wishes: Tis the Season

In keeping with the spirit of this festive season and contemplating what the new year may have in store, I've decided to make a little wish list for what I can already sense will be a fabulous 2014. Here are my wishes for the future:

That I visit at least two new destinations  in this fascinating world of ours, over the course of the year. I've got to keep chipping away at my ever-lengthening bucket list. 2014 is as good a year as any. Travel, travel, travel.

That I learn a new language so I can speak to the charming locals of the destinations I select to travel to. Perhaps I will begin with brushing up on my French. The people of Paris and the south of France would certainly get a treat if they had to converse with me while I stutter away in my current sub par French speak.

That I will stop stressing over the small insignificant details of my day-to-day and instead celebrate  the little victories.

That I will attempt one thing each day that causes a mild rush of fear at the thought of. Fear and excitement will become synonymous in my world, because it is due to melding the two that the best adventures happen.

That I reach out to those I may have lost touch with and invest more in my friendships. I often become so caught up in the routines of life that I sometimes neglect to leave time in my schedule for dear friends of my past and even those of my present. Connecting, reflecting as well as sharing stories and laughs make the best new memories.

That I show my family, especially my parents, just how much they mean to me, daily. It's difficult to truly demonstrate and communicate the impact their unconditional love, support and guidance has had on me and how appreciative I am of their encouragement and the wise words that are always formulated so perfectly anytime I need a bit of advice.

That as I grow one year older, I will grow one year younger at heart. I want to roll down more hills and frolic aimlessly in more fields (that one's for you Sara) without giving a damn as to who witnesses. Perhaps a re-visitation to the activity of cow tipping is on the horizon.

That I truly begin connecting my past failures and mistakes to my current successes and achievements, whether in regards to my career, relationships or health. It is by way of the slips and scars that the summit is reached.

Fashion Speaks

Fashion is artwork that we wear, day in and day out; the art that reveals and speaks volumes  about who we are without the need of uttering so much as a word.  This is not to say that fashion is the most pertinent or critical method to communicate who we are as people, but it is the most apparent layer of our  being , so therefore has the most impact, initially. Surely we are about more than the clothes we  select to put on our backs,  but isn't it true that an individual’s choice of clothing, hair style, shoe choice, and even accessory choice all impact our initial perception of him or her? And even more so, doesn't it truly allow us to determine whether there is a commonality or a uniqueness that intrigues us to learn more? Fashion is a treat for the senses; a visual melody of hues, fabrics, silhouettes and textures.

A flowing, flowered print maxi dress softly communicates a comfortable elegance, tastefulness and grace. A sequined black mini, paired with a blazer and sling-backed pumps communicate business-ready with a fun and flirty flare. A comfortable pair of faded and distressed denim, matched with an over-sized blouse or sweater communicates comfortable, casual and ready for coffee talks. What we select on a daily basis to clothe ourselves in, whether we intend it or not, transmits a certain message to those around us.

It is for this reason that Portia Delaney, the main protagonist and narrator of my upcoming novel, despises her work attire. A medical office administrator is not left with much choice when it comes to daily fashion selections. It boils down to one very boring and abrasive word, "scrubs".

Alright, outfit, yes outfit. Well this is the most inexcusable tidbit of all. I’m here selecting an outfit for a first day at a job where my only selection can be from an assortment of various coloured scrubs, when I want to be making a selection between Gucci and Versace.  Lavender it is, I suppose. With that disgruntled decision made, I reach for my terribly ordinary lavender scrubs, quickly pull them on, jet into the bathroom and whisk a brush through my hair while applying a pinch of foundation and bronzer, because I’m too pale to even stand it. I add a bit of tinted lip gloss and I’m set to go. Yes to go to my, err….ummm… bore of a career. Pay increase or not, just the thought of getting compensated to give up my dreams on a daily basis makes my stomach turn, and anxiety take over.

Portia initially allows herself to suffer from fashion workday/weekender syndrome. Her career choice limits her ability to express herself by way of her true sense of fashion and she’s left feeling drab and masked throughout the entirety of the work week until Friday evening when she truly feels inspired to dig out her designer duds.

As she becomes more committed to attaining her dream career as a fashion designer and stylist to the stars her drive opens doors for her career and the doors of her wardrobe. All the showstopper looks collected over the years are finally strutted on the regular, and the true outer Portia is able to make a full appearance as desired.

“Portia Delaney, you look like you should be on the cover of one of those big time fashion mags you’ll soon be styling for!” She remains completely fixated on me and proceeds to accost me by running her hands all over the crinoline and layers of my couture masterpiece. I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and admit that I would want to have my way with me too. The emerald green fit and flare gown is so flattering to my bust and waistline with the scooped neckline and the corset style bodice, I look like I’m straight out of Vanity Fair, the William Makepace Thackery novel, not the magazine. My hair is now piled in ringlets on my head and bedazzled with pearls. My exposed neck is adorned with a rose gold chain, elegant yet understated with a tiny pearl encased diamond dangling from its end. I’ve finished this ancient-made-new again look off with my BCGB stilettos and an ear to ear fuchsia pink smile

The pieces and products in the everyday life of the superlative and creatively freed Portia Delaney include the following:
  Fierce footwear
Whether dazzling crowds with her designs or finding herself as the one being dazzled  by her handsome companion, Portia’s footwear is always first rate and usually increases her 5 ft 6 inch frame by 3-4 inches.

  Enormous shades
Let’s face it ladies, when we can get away with it, going au natural in the eye makeup department is always a possibility when you've got some large stylish frames to throw over your recently awakened and puffed up eyes.

Marc Jacobs tote
In the early chapters of the novel, it is this signature piece that allows Portia to still feel some connection to her fashionista tendencies during the gruelling 9-5 days at her scrub- overrun office.

A little black dress (or 50)
I recently had the pleasure of attending the opening of the Kate Spade store in the neighbourhood of Yorkville. The event was hosted by ELLE Canada and in the words spoken so eloquently at the opening by their Editor in chief, Ms. Noreen Flanagan, “Every girl should have at least 50 little black dresses in her closet”.

A comfy pair of loose fitting boyfriend style jeans
For those days of jet setting, meeting up for chats with the girls or having a quiet evening in, the boyfriend denim is a must.

Vibrant shades of lip glosses and lipsticks
Red, fuchsia , maroon, violet, frosted pink, whatever the colour, a well-defined lip is never a bad idea.

Beyond Portia and the world of trends, style and fads, fashion promotes the opportunity to allow true individuality to shine if we stay true to ourselves.

A Tribute to Toronto (T.O., T.Ro, T.dot, Tarana etc.)

I have selected the city of Toronto to be the home base for the main character of my novel for a variety of reasons.  I am coming to the end of my novel writing process. I've completed 22 chapters of the intended 24 and an eagerness and excitement is overtaking me at the thought of beginning my next writing project; this being, starting up an online lifestyle magazine.  The magazine will include articles and editorials on everything from health, wellness and fashion to the newest hot spots and upcoming events. This new venture will allow me to share, on the regular, all of the reasons I already love Toronto while also discovering new reasons to love this remarkable city! The magazine will be a tribute to all that the G.T.A has to offer and will focus on  exposing its beauty and appeal by way of real people and businesses that make it what it is, fabulous!

Mayor Rob Ford aside, the metropolis that is the T.dot is a melting pot of  talented, hard working dreamers and revelers who seek to make this city the best that it can be. Recently voted "Most Youthful City in the World" by the Youthfulcities initiative, Toronto provides just the environment for a young entrepreneur, student, lawyer, teacher, actor, musician etc. to thrive in his or her career or studies, whilst being able to maintain a balanced enjoyment filled lifestyle due to the infinite list of things to do, places to go and people to see.

Ten reasons I heart Toronto:

10. It's warmer in the winter than the city I grew up in is!

Much love, Ottawa. You are always in my heart.

Winter surfing at The Beaches in Toronto!
9. The shopping.

Helloooo Yorkville, Eaton's Centre, Yorkdale and Queen West!

8. The entirely entertaining public transit journeys.

I will never forget being serenaded by a woman who truly believed she was Whitney Houston while riding on the Bloor/Danforth line. Her rendition of "The Greatest Love of All" brought a tear to my eye and had the entire subway car singing along with her.

7. The markets including the ever so popular and historical St. Lawrence Market.

Aside from the more permanent locations, there is also no shortage of pop up markets offering the best of country goodness in the heart of the city.

6. The historical landmarks, museums and galleries.

The Distillery District is one of my faves, because who doesn't want to enjoy a delicious beer in a historical setting and meander along cobblestone streets only to find delicious pastries, coffees and fascinating art work? I'll be heading to the District's Christmas Market this weekend. Head on down!

5. The diverse communities and neighbourhoods.

One I find myself visiting frequently in the summer is The Beaches. Can't get away to the Caribbean like you had planned? Head to the Beaches to catch those rays then burn off the triple scoop double chocolate ice cream cone you consumed by strolling or jogging down the boardwalk a few miles.

4. The nightlife and entertainment.

King West is perpetually reinventing itself and the nightlife is always stellar. Can't get in to one event or club? You're sure to find a brand new venue, right around the corner, offering free admission and an atmosphere that will make you forget you ever intended to go elsewhere.

3. The restaurants.

If you're a foodie, Toronto is the city to be in. New top rate restaurants are constantly opening their doors to the masses in this city and no matter what you're in the mood for, be it Chinese, Moroccan or Greek etc., you're sure to find it within a 5 kilometre vicinity of wherever you are.

2. The festivals and events.

Is there ever a weekend in Toronto that there isn't a festival of some sort happening? I pose this question in hopes of an answer. Please do tell!

1. The people.

This multicultural metropolis is home to some of the most charismatic and incredible people.  By saying this, I'm not simply referring to the iconic figures residing in this city, but those remarkable every day individuals. Each day, for every negative interaction I may witness between two people, I witness twice as many kind gestures and good deeds. Whether these involve a teenager giving up his seat for an elderly woman on the subway, or a young woman helping a blind man to cross the street, or a simple smile and a friendly hello in my condo building's elevator from a complete stranger, kindness and consideration are alive and well in the T.

It's no wonder I selected Toronto as the main city of residence for the young, yet bitter at heart, struggling enthusiast, Portia Delaney.

Much love T.O.

Define "Beauty"

What is beauty? What is it that makes something or someone beautiful? What makes one photograph or painting or poem or person or pattern more beautiful than an array of others? The definition of beauty is "a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight." I am however overly aware that the colours and shapes which please my own critical eye are vastly different from those pleasing to my friends and acquaintances. An outfit combination involving a flowered pant and a striped top, for example, would never find its way onto this bod, yet I know a select few who would pair the two and work them fiercely, looking edgy and ultra-hip while doing so. I prefer solids and muted prints. Call me boring?

In writing is it not the same? The well-known poem by Robert Frost, and my personal favourite of all, Nothing Gold can Stay, is a beautiful tribute to the cycle of life and change that certainly is inevitable,

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.

-Robert Frost

I'm sure many would interpret this poem as being far from beautiful if they were focusing more on the unwanted change and the negativity that can be brought about by it. Or perhaps others may find it too simplistic and undeserving of the recognition gained by a Wordsworth or a Yeats. Is the answer not then truly in the individual perception, attitude and preference?

As a woman I am ever aware of glances and advances made by male passers-by or those in given situations. Just the same, however, I am all too aware of those who don’t give a second look. What is it that warrants a lingering gaze from one and a completely disinterested, steadfast breeze-pass by another? Well personal preference of course!

So let's deduce and conclude, shall we? A true definition of the term "beautiful" is only accurate if somewhere in it the words "personal preference" are inserted. Without these, the term's definition is inaccurate. Obvious? Of course the very fact that beauty is in the eye of the beholder is an obvious and well known fact.

Why is it then that today we are so concerned with what the media deems as beautiful?  Really, by hanging on the words of the select few who determine what’s hot and what’s not, we’re allowing our own perception of what’s beautiful to be made impertinent to our own lives, Caving to the pressures of the media machine to look a certain way and weigh a certain amount and have a certain hair style and read a certain trilogy and try a certain diet and cleanse a certain way and buy a certain brand and drive a certain car is neglecting what is truly beautiful  about humanity. We are each unique with preferences, voices, shapes and sizes of our own. THAT is beautiful.

Beauty is a prayer, a song, an exchanged smile, a love gained, a new life, a good deed, a hug, a lingering kiss, a poem, a journey ....

The very issue of feeling pressured to conform and to completely disregard her own judgment is one that haunts Portia throughout the entirety of the novel's action. It is one which undoubtedly plagues all women to some degree or another. Is conforming to attain a goal truly considered success when the end is achieved?

Betty, Becky and Plain Jane

It is interesting that after taking a moment to reflect about all of the novels I have read over the years, and to select from those my most favourite of all, those that stand out among the others are of course novels which focus on a somewhat lost and inadvertently helpless, even seemingly hopeless, female heroine.

My love for Jane Austen and her romantically charged tales, which are centered around the stringent rules in regards to class structure and expected decorum of her day, has been strong and true since the tender age of 14 when I picked up Pride and Prejudice for the first time. It most certainly was not the last time I would flip through its pages. I have read that novel countless times and with each read through it feels as though it's my first perusal. There is a magic behind Austen's writing.

It seems as though with each read the true agony I imagine to have been felt by Elizabeth Bennet during her passionate and heated exchanges with Mr. Darcy is more and more identifiable. Her yearning for him, so muddled by her confusion and misinterpretation of his intentions, leaves a young woman like myself feeling just as gutted and despairing as the adrift heroine seems to feel. The eloquent language and incredibly developed characters left me infatuated with the genius behind the work. I will forever view Austen as an icon to English literature. I must say, as a side note, that when I lived in London, England for a year, I fell head over heels for the great (x many) nephew of the very legend herself. Romance is in the Austen line, and this was proven to be the case as our relationship continued through the entirety of my time there. I suppose I may have been starry eyed from the get-go after being made aware of his connection to my icon.

The Brontes have also made a tremendous impact on my literary experience. Out of the three it is Charlotte's Jane Eyre which I esteem above the others. In Grade 12 English class I was asked to complete an independent study followed by a seminar presentation on this very novel. That seminar ran 30 minutes longer than allotted simply because I did not feel that only touching on the major events in the novel would do it justice. My seminar turned into story time with Jessica as I verbally recounted the entire action of the plot right up to the mysterious unveiling in the final chapters. My English teacher at the time gave me an "A" even though I sorely misjudged the timing of the presentation. The "A" grade was allocated due to the enthusiasm with which I shared the extremely accurate and exact details of the plot. Jane Eyre, much like Pride and Prejudice is a novel I picked up to read and re-read many times over the years. The isolation and rejection initially experienced by a young Jane produces such compassion and sympathy. The seemingly pathetic, plain abandoned girl's journey is one of great victory in the face of uncertainty.

'I am not an angel,' I asserted; 'and I will not be one till I die: I will be myself. Mr. Rochester, you must neither expect nor exact anything celestial of me-for you will not get it, any more than I shall get it of you: which I do not at all anticipate."
-Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre

Finally,  and this may seem a far cry from the two renowned authors I have already deemed as being partly responsible for my inspiration, yet Sophie Kinsella has managed to entertain and inspire me with her frivolous and witty tales involving female protagonists such as Rebecca Bloomwood. In The Secret Confessions of a Shopoholic, Becky is a hopeless wreck and not only that, she's got a keen eye for fashion. She is simply a character that I easily identified with as it was during my mid twenties that I discovered her; a time when my finances were in a dire situation, straight out of university with little to no income and still living at home with my parents. I had a love for shopping and not a spare dime to act on my impulse with.  Kinsella made light of a horrendous situation in the life of Becky and the humour allowed me to escape from the less than perfect situation I found myself in. I continue to this day to be a hardcore Kinsella fan, ensuring to pick up a copy of her latest book as soon as it hits the shelves.

"Ok, don't panic. Don't panic. It's only a VISA bill. It's a piece of paper; a few numbers. I mean, just how scary can a few numbers be?"

-Sophie Kinsella, Confessions of a Shopaholic

I suppose the main character of my novel The Tantalizing Tale of a Bitter Sweetheart, encompasses aspects of all three female protagonists mentioned. Her dream is much like that of Elizabeth's, her journey is much like that of Jane's and she is quirky, impulsive and somewhat of a mess, just like Becky Bloomwood.

Wanderlust

To lust after wandering... that must be what this term I have become so accustomed to using as a descriptor for my own adventure seeking behaviour means. Well Wikipedia (yes..yes...I used Wikipedia..gasp! The English teacher, who tells her students to never use Wikipedia as a source for reliable information, went against her own rule) defines Wanderlust as, "a strong desire for or impulse to wander or travel and explore the world." So there you have it, a lust to wander this planet and to reap the benefits of the experiences had while doing so.

Of this descriptor I am guilty as charged. Swirling around inside me is a constant need to feed my appetite for exploration of new destinations; to meet an array of fascinating people from new and exciting locales and to learn as best as I can about their culture and lifestyle. In the back of my mind as I am typing this is a bucket list a mile long of the countries and remote destinations I wish to visit next; Argentina, Peru, Chile, Costa Rica, Fiji, China, Japan, Brazil and the list continues. I have been so fortunate in my life to have been taken along on family trips to far off places, such as Columbia, England, and much of Europe. My parents have much to do with my now innate globetrotting ways.

It was when I finished my education that I began setting off on my own adventures. Some retraced the pathways traveled at an earlier time in my life. My appreciation for the somewhat familiar locations and cultures grew when I was reintroduced to them as an adult.  I have taken away numerous wonderful friendships that continue to this day from my times spent in England and Spain, especially.

This past year, however, after enjoying a summer teaching in Spain and having seen the majority of Europe, I was made aware that it was time to pay attention to the fascinating cities in Canada's own backyard. I finally visited the Big Apple which allowed me to be introduced to someone that I now cherish as becoming my main inspiration behind my "little" writing project.  He’s an individual who has not confined himself to one role in the world; an individual who constantly seeks new and exciting opportunities and whose drive to attain his dreams, goals and ambitions awoke something in me. The passions which had been so long buried beneath the surface of expectation and the labels stamped on by achieving a post-secondary education, began to seep through. For this I will always be grateful and will hold him dear to my heart.

I have personally chided myself for using my hard earned dollars to feed my need to travel, but when I truly reflect on all of the incredible people that have come into my life due to my insatiable need to explore, I no longer regret, and am instead thankful for each and every journey I've embarked on, regardless of the cost.  Aside from continuing to write for the love of it, I also intend to achieve the seemingly insurmountable goal of crossing each and every destination off my bucket list. Life here is temporary and time is fleeting.

Portia Delaney, is in fact a character who, much like myself, yearns for adventure and new experience. As written in previous entries, Portia makes her way to Paris and also makes the acquaintance of numerous important individuals who bring both positive and negative outcomes to her journey. In a way, Portia herself is at the mercy of a type of wanderlust, yet not in the way one typically yearns to wander. Portia's wanderings have to do with self-identity. Her mind wanders and calculates the hurdles she will have to clear before arriving at the career she lusts after so intrinsically. One such hurdle comes in the form of a Ms. Liv Pickard, a definite road block in more ways than one to the ever so dainty and proper Ms. Portia Delaney,

I want to….. I want to rip that feather fascinator off her head and stomp on it like I were a two year old. Then I want to pluck every feather out of that ridiculous dress she is gallivanting around in and cram them up her nose.

Portia regains composure and manages to commit herself to a new perspective on the situation,

My journey will be different. Surely there are more good and honest people than terrible, carnivorous gluttons such as Liv, in this world.

Surprisingly enough, Portia's journey does not end with an exciting adventure to Paris. What's a novel about achieving one's dreams without a moment of reflection in the Empire State?

L.C. and the City

As I have noted in previous posts, my novel has been inspired by a number of amazing people from my life. One particular friend, who I am continually thankful for and in awe of due to her commitment and dedication while striving to attain her dream, no matter what challenges life throws her way,  has become not only an inspiration to me in terms of my devotion to completing this project, but also has become my muse for the main character's career aspirations.

My good friend, let's call her L.C., picked up and moved to Toronto after leaving law school behind, to chase her dream of becoming a fashion designer. She is beyond talented and can scrawl out a flawless sketch of the most couture looking garment at the drop of a hat and then can make that sketch a reality with her sewing skills. I had the pleasure of being roomies with her for a time, and believe it when I say, she's got a passion for fashion. Dress forms took over the basement with pinned on creations; I would have gladly worn any in a heartbeat. Fabric swatches decorated the floor along with sketches and measuring tapes.

She wowed me from the fateful day we met on my 27th birthday, when I was a newcomer to Toronto. Thanks to the bond between my roommate at the time, let's call her Jax, and L.C., the two invited me to the home of the fashionista where I met the core group of lovely ladies I now call my besties. They celebrated my birthday with me as if they had known me for years and I instantly found the female loves of my life.

LC was successful in attaining a degree in fashion, rightly so, yet to maintain a livelihood in the costly city of Toronto, it's difficult to pour your heart solely into your one true passion. L.C. has continued to keep her creative spark alive by continuing designing,  contributing to fashion blogs and now attends special events as a correspondent for Fashion Studio Magazine, all the while working a 9-5 office job in the heart of Yorkville. I feel with every inch of my being that her talent and drive will one day allow her to fully transition over to the career of her dreams

It is no wonder that I modeled my main character's dream to enter the fashion world after this dear friend of mine. The main character, Portia's, medical office job is not her calling;  styling for the runways of Paris, New York and Milan is her dream. She sets out to achieve all of this and more, in the same determined manner L.C. has sought out to make her passion her livelihood.

I withdraw my sketches from my bag and spread them across his drafting table for him to peruse and to critique. I finish organizing them and take two steps back so I am standing directly next to Nina. She grabs my hand and I feel her give a little squeeze in support of the clearly nerve racking situation. Michele puts a pair of dark framed glasses on and leans in so close to the designs that it seems as though he’s attempting to use his sense of taste and smell to make his judgement about the designs. He peers and seems to waft in each sketch for a full minute at a time, inspecting every pattern and detail included. Moving from one to the other, I begin to feel a bit worried when sighs and deep breaths accompany his study. As he makes his way to the final design, peers, groans and takes a step back, I hold my own breath while waiting for the verdict. Michele spins on his heel to face me, removes his spectacles, hangs his head and I suddenly feel a rush of fear.

It is by way of the challenging, nerve racking and intimidating situations that we truly arrive at our dream outcomes.

Happy Birth Week, L.C.!!! Love you much xoxo

What's Tantalizing Without Titillating?

Now every great novel, well whichever novel I deem as "great", is so because of the characters within it, and the relationships within it. While it is wonderful to read about the bonds between a solid group of girlfriends and exciting to read about the toxic circumstances that may arise due to certain individuals that are written into the main character's circle, be it by work or pleasure, it is the romances and torrid love affairs that cause me to flip through those pages at a rapid fire pace. I think most ladies would agree, yes? Well the men who work their way into the lives of the quirky ladies in my novel, The Tantalizing Tale of a Bitter Sweetheart, inspire just such reaction. Perhaps the male characters are not quite the Casanovas one might associate with the usual fiery Harlequin romance genre and may be a bit subtle in their advances, but is it not true that the subtle yet substantial development of a passionate romance is much more exciting for the senses (in fiction and real life) than one that comes on instantaneously without question?

Portia's dream world initially is far removed from her reality,

He tenderly kissed my neck as he ran his fingertips along the small of my back and pulled me in tightly to then meet his soft lips with mine.  My whole body seemed to be melting in his embrace while he caressed my mouth with his own. It was a kiss that was so unimaginable I could have stood there forever needing nothing more........... The words that are suddenly harassing my ears become louder and louder while the image of my picture perfect proposal begins to fade into a swirling swiveling sketch and then nothingness aside from, “ Get up! Wakey wakey! Portia!” Oh damn it all to hell.

However, her prospects and romantic circumstance, greatly improve when her own tenacity and attitude gears up for a win. Take Guillaume for example, a Parisian fashionisto who wanders into the very cafe at which the main character, Portia, is enjoying her first Parisian made espresso,

As I’m contemplating what the remainder of the week will bring, the entry bell on the doorway jingles and I catch a sight of the most delectable man I have ever encountered in person. He strides past me in a confident and deliberate manner towards the wretched human being behind the counter. To my amazement the dishevelled little man greets him with an enormous smile and begins making his order promptly while carrying on what sounds like a jovial and pleasant conversation, although the French being spoken is completely lost on me.  I scan the scene and determine that this gorgeous new arrival is actually quite the regular at Café Lateral and must be one hell of a charmer to transform the mood of that unwelcoming and miserable little man into this exuberant individual I now see before me.

As they continue in their interaction, I cannot help but take in the pure magnificence of the man before me.  Clothed in a navy Polo cable knit sweater which fits just right to show off his well -formed chest and strong arms, jeans which sit perfectly, not too loosely and not too tightly. They adhere so nicely to his backside that I am fully aware it is remarkably toned and delightful to look at. Unfortunately, however, my scanning of his backside has turned into animalistic ogling and when I eventually divert my eyes back up to his face I see that he has finished his interactions with the café barista and is now giving me a concerned look.  A sudden wave of embarrassment begins to take me over but immediately dissipates! Good god this man must be something special because I don’t even care that he has caught me glaring at his ass as if it’s my prey and I’m the hunter. He is unbelievably handsome and I will glare if I want to.

He saunters over to the side counter where he begins to add what looks like vanilla shavings to his cappuccino and I take in everything from the neck up.  Smooth caramel coloured skin, a chiseled jaw that even Michelangelo would have had trouble mastering on his portraits of Greek gods, the perfect amount of scruffy yet sexy stubble framing his undeniably delicious lips, and those perfect eyes that are so clear and vibrant, it’s as if I’m gazing into the waters of the Caribbean. I breathe it in, all of it and as he glances at me one more time with the awareness that I have been checking him out this entire time, he smiles to display a perfect set of teeth and two perfectly positioned dimples, still evident within the scruff. I exhale perhaps a touch too loudly because he lets out a chuckle and makes his way toward me.

What's a Parisian adventure, without a Parisian companion after all? Portia's vivacious sidekicks each welcome new romances as well, although not all bud and blossom; some burn and fizzle, however, each male character becomes an integral part in the course of the novel's plot.

In the words of the most renown playwright and poet of all time, There have been many great men that have flattered the people who ne'er loved them.

How much fun it is to fabricate a few more!

The climb to the top can be littered with missteps and hidden snags, canyons even, which may cause a person to feel like they're going nowhere and like for every step forward they're taking about 10 back. Certain people may become intentional road blocks along the journey as well; individuals who want to see you fail and keep you down in those hidden canyons. To those naysayers and prickly individuals who believe they are entitled to be the thorns in your side, simply say "Well done. It is because of you that I am even more fired up to succeed." Kill 'em with kindness. No one is ever in the wrong when emitting a sweet strength that is fueled by pure determination.

The main character of my upcoming novel, The Tantalizing Tale of a Bitter Sweetheart, is initially not a woman who is hungry for success. She allows her fear of failure to keep her in a perpetually boring routine which closes the door to any new and exciting challenges.

Her initial circumstance and attitude is clear from the following excerpts:

"...but let’s face it I’m at rock bottom with S.O.S. carved in the sand and flare guns blazing."

"The dream was perfection, and waking to a reality that can only be described as the exact opposite of perfection, is highly undesirable, yet this similar feeling each morning as I come to, has been my lot in life and just continues perpetually."

"Pleasure and management really do NOT go together, in my world anyhow. I have quite a laissez faire management style as I completely dislike and flee from confrontation. I suppose that’s the reason I’ve had 5 different places of work in the past 2 years. If there was Guinness Book of Records for the most job placement switches by a medical office administrator, I would have the title, hands down."

Portia has a number of encounters and experiences which ignite a desire to make a change and to want to step out of her comfort zone. Some of the toughest trials remain ahead:

I dreamed the most horrible dreams all night that have me questioning my future once again and have left me completely unmotivated to even be going to Paris, the city of my dreams and on the morning I’m set to depart for it. In the most vivid dream I was swimming under water and couldn’t find an escape to the surface. I just kept swimming and swimming, suffocating in the murky water. Finally I looked up to see an escape. I fluttered up as fast as I could manage only to see Ms. Lewis’ face grimacing down at me. She then let out a cackle which was  followed by immediate darkness as I realized she had blocked the passage completely. I woke up gasping for air and dripping with sweat. My mind was racing, recalling the dream and I simply could not go back to sleep for fear that I would revisit the action of the dream exactly where I had left off.

/This time her fear has a positive effect on her. The advice of friends and her lunatic therapist cause Portia to push on, but not without difficulties:

"I stare at the words while gripping the paper tight within my sweaty palms.  I re-read the letter over and over until my vision becomes blurred and my head feels cloudy. I feel as if my body is absolutely frozen and I want to laugh at the ridiculousness of this woman but the light-heartedness which I would love to view this circumstance with is being hijacked by a chill that keeps running up my spine upon reading and re-reading the words 'You are an insignificant piece of dust' and 'Be warned'. "

"It has crossed my mind to make Nina aware of the letter I received while she was sucking all of the oxygen out of the room in a deep sleep, but I just couldn’t see how it would appease the situation any. Knowing Nina, she’d march right up to Liv and rip her extensions clear out of her hair without a second thought, if I enlightened her to the situation. I decide to keep the recent events to myself and carry on in my determination to use success as my weapon of choice."

Though the trials and negative interactions experienced along the way towards her end goal are unpleasant and overwhelming, the sweetness felt when that goal is achieved makes those circumstances fade away.

"The venue is sparkling with what appears to be waterfalls of white twinkle lights, cascading from all sides. As I peer up through the triangular shaped glass roof, dusk is setting in and the faint appearance of stars in the sky are peeking through to become the natural back drop of this fateful event. ....This is a dream; I’m living a truly magnificent dream."

Hey Ladies!

All girls are astonishing; all girls hold a remarkable purpose; all girls deserve the opportunity to live out this purpose and shine.

The female characters in my novel are all quirky and spunky women each with a bit of an edge. Although Portia is the main character and has unique qualities that make her stand out, the supporting characters make up for her mild mannerisms and introverted tendencies. Meet a few of the ladies.

Portia  - Narrator who is hopelessly awkward and stuck in a mind numbing medical receptionist job.

My friends are mostly amazing, but sometimes having great friends, who have it all together, just help to highlight everything lacking in your own life. With that summation of my view on my life circumstance, I slip on my god awful, yet comfy crocs, grab my Marc Jacobs purse (because I must still demonstrate some good taste in my daily wardrobe) and strut out the door while working those lavender scrubs to the max. “Today will be amazing.” I keep telling myself, over and over as I approach the elevator.

As the doors open my heart skips a beat. That intriguingly mysterious and dashing man from the lobby I crossed paths with the other day is standing opposite me taking in my attire from head to toe. I’ve secretly been scouting this guy out for months now but it wasn’t until last week that we had our first verbal interaction. We were both checking our mail and he had accidentally received my cable bill in his mail box. I acted all aloof, because an acquaintance of mine, Lucia, told me aloof is attractive to men. She has been with a gorgeous anchorman for 3 years so she has to know a thing or two about this stuff.

I then tried to converse about how little I watched T.V. due to having so many hobbies. He then asked about my hobbies and I froze. I FROZE!! I couldn’t think of one! I couldn’t even make one up because the idea of “having a hobby” was so foreign to me. I just stood there, eyes wide like a deer in the headlights, attempting to conjure some interest up, then I got thinking about how sad it was that I didn’t have a hobby, and by that point he was so uncomfortable, rightly so, that he simply said, “Well, enjoy your afternoon.” and walked away scratching his head.

I then went straight up to the apartment, flipped on the television and attempted to create a list of actual hobbies that I have, just in case I ever meet him again and have the opportunity to redeem myself. After scribbling television, wine and baths on a notepad, I then decided to make a list of fake hobbies. That list included: horseback riding (never ridden one in my life), baking (hahahaha), gardening (well I did manage to keep all my neighbours plants alive when asked to water twice weekly while she was away on business), fashion (if lavender scrubs and crocs equate to making fashion a hobby then ding..ding..ding). With that I concluded that THIS MUST CHANGE! I then wrote “GET A HOBBY!!” to finish off the list.

Anyway, back to reality and the present circumstance. This unbelievably gorgeous man who I made undeniably uncomfortable days ago is now standing 2 feet from me, a half worried, half sincere smile on his face, dark tousled hair, so perfectly out of place, pin striped suit and checked tie. Professional, dapper, yet still somewhat misplaced as though the clothing just doesn’t belong on him. He’s like a woodsman playing dress up. He’s, in short,   the picture of my perfect man. At first glance, he looks like he has it all together, but underneath, he’s a little awkward and rough around the edges. Kind of like me. Well I suppose at this exact moment, I’m a bit more obviously rough around the edges as I haven’t had the motivation to shave my extremities for days. However, one good thing about scrubs is they mask all that prickliness wonderfully.

Charlie- Gamer addict and close friend of Portia's who becomes the subject of an intervention.

Charlie, as I now contemplate things, really is the type that never owns up to anything in the moment, but does come around to an accurate realization eventually. Like, for instance, when we were all at a house warming party in the Beach. A group of 20 or so were gathered around a bonfire in our mutual acquaintance, Paulo’s, backyard and he was giving a speech to thank everyone for coming.  Charlie decided to pick up one of the unlit tiki torches and light it on the bonfire.  I think she was three sheets to the wind because she just stood there holding it tightly, yet no matter how tight her grip, her wobbly legs indicated that disastrous circumstances were eminent. In the moment it did cross my mind to steady her and casually remove the torch from her hands; I , however, did not want to be rude and make rustling or cause a scene during Paulo’s speech, so I just hoped and prayed for the best. My prayers went unheard because about 3 seconds later, Charlie began teetering and tottering back and forth like a cat tail in the marsh. This cat tail had weight, and after 5 teeter totters side to side, Charlie teetered one last time, but this time her legs gave way. She fell to the deck with a tremendous thud, the tikki torch made immediate contact with the cedar wood that the brand new lavish deck was constructed out of, and the deck soon was set ablaze.

Guests were running in every direction, some to escape having legs, (and designer apparel) scorched, others trying to find a water source to douse the flames. Paulo had a look of horror on his face as if he could not quite believe what was happening. He started screeching and literally running in circles trying to make a decision as to what to do to save his newly built gem of a deck. Finally Paulo’s friend Travis had the sense to unwind the garden hose, crank the nozzle to the highest power, and blanket the fire in a heartbeat. Had Travis not enjoyed the company of men over women, I would have jumped into his arms immediately and insist we ride off into the sunset. (Honestly, all the good men are gay or taken).

The next morning, Charlie denied it all when recapping the evening with me over the phone, and said that she saw the torch was just set alight off to the side, that she had no part in lighting it, and was worried it would fall to produce the very outcome that resulted. Her explanation was that she saw it teeter in the breeze and went to catch the torch before it fell, but she was too late. I couldn’t believe my ears!  I know that I was not the only one who saw Charlie light and hold the culprit of a torch. Well she denied this for 3 weeks, but when Paulo called her to ask for an amount to cover the cost of the deck and indicated that he had previously installed security cameras in the back yard, therefore meaning he had the entire debacle on tape, Charlie finally owned up.  $2000 later, Paulo and Charlie made amends and the ban on her visiting was lifted.

Nina- A renaissance woman with a vivacious enthusiasm for life. Dabbles in a variety of businesses and skips through life with a "go get 'em and eat cake while you do" attitude. She settles on a more permanent career towards the middle of the action and this choice becomes a direct link in helping Portia out of her rut.

Nina, herself is a spunky, self-employed entrepreneur. What it is she actually makes money at is a mystery to me. She could be turning tricks for all I know. Although that really isn't her style  Her work focus, much like her personal interest focus, changes on the regular. Last time I heard, she had opened a baking studio called Baking with Nina. I remember helping to distribute flyers to local coffee shops and community centres to help drum up business, and on them she had included a picture of an elderly Italian lady. This pretty well indicated that this woman was Nina. I knew this was a bit misleading seeing as Nina is a petite, blonde fire cracker who has barely spent more than an hour in her entire life, baking.

After the distribution storm, I never heard another word about Baking with Nina, which kind of ticks me off! I spent hours printing and handing out those flyers. I got the worst sunburn while distributing them AND that night I had a blind date. He took one look at my deep fried epidermis, muttered some excuse about an emergency situation then flew out the door.

Angelica- A spoiled daddy's girl who never had to truly work a day in her life. She becomes more of a nemesis to Portia throughout the novel, yet this negativity fuels Portia's need to succeed.

Angelica is definitely an oversensitive, spoiled, health nut. I adore her and despise her all at once. She has always gotten whatever she has wanted in life and still manages to make others feel badly about insignificant items, such as pizza toppings.

Keep an eye out for more posts. It's Friday, have some champagne and a cupcake to celebrate!

It has been an exciting journey creating this novel.  It may seem that writing fiction requires the least amount of leg work and research; that it's all make believe and therefore can involve whatever content the author desires. The latter is quite true and is why I absolutely love writing fiction, but as for the former, I entirely disagree, especially if the end goal is to produce a work that is identifiable and meaningful to a specific audience.

To bring this novel to fruition and to make it the most appealing it can be to the audience that I am intending to reach, I have spent the past year observing, analyzing, reflecting and enjoying.  I have observed the tenacity and drive of young professional women I am happy to call friends and confidants, I have analyzed my own accounts of recent years from heartbreak to wonderful romances, career lows to deserving successes and the journeys sought out in destinations I had never intended to venture to but some how wound up visiting.  Each of these points of analysis have benefited me during the creation of the female characters within the novel.

I've learned that to be truly successful when creating a believable character of fiction, drawing on reality and my own vulnerabilities and insecurities as a young woman is paramount. I have reflected on verbal accounts told to me by acquaintances and gal pals. In turn we have enjoyed each others company and a ton of laughs while reminiscing about the humour found in our day to day sagas, experienced while making it as young professionals. I am thankful for the inspiration that has come via these remarkable friends of mine.

The most exciting leg work and research drummed up by this "little" project resulted due to my selection of the various settings used in the novel. I chose Toronto as the city of residence for the main character, Portia Delaney, seeing as Toronto is a vibrant metropolis with unending opportunity for the career focused. It is not only my home, but has won my heart. About Toronto, I did not need to learn much more. However, Portia's journey takes her to the City of Lights, about which I do know the basics, but the term "basic" when writing about Paris just seems utterly contradictory and inexcusable. I have had the pleasure of visiting Paris in the past, but the most prevalent knowledge I had was about the touristy sites and the common associations the average North American makes when referring to Paris. I knew that to write this remarkable city into my novel meant truly knowing it the best that I could in the time I had. No, I didn't hop a plane and head straight to Europe (although I would in a heartbeat); I researched.  Not only did I research the history, neighbourhoods and landmarks, but the architecture as well. I found myself in Chapters on numerous occasions parked in front of a particular fascinating display devoted fully to Paris. I became lost in the art work and photographs, attempting to delve into the culture from the other side of the pond. I will be hopping a plane in the new year, however, to this very destination. Oh la la!

As Audrey said, "Paris is always a good idea".

In Portia Delaney's words,

You can join me if you want, or you can stay here and become taken over by envy while I’m traipsing around the Eiffel Tower and La Louvre, eating baguettes and cheese in a magical ancient courtyard and letting a handsome man in a beret ignite a Parisian passion deep within.
