To peel or not to peel...  chemical peels and hydro--lifting treatments unmasked.

For many years I have been slathering on home remedies and store-bought creams to keep my skin moisturized while attempting to halt inevitable cell degeneration and the looming onset of aging skin in its tracks.

Yes, there are many effective daily creams and treatments that have definite benefits, but with all these recent alternative medical tactics that require lasers, needles, buffers and additional technologies that are now used, it is easy to get swept up and carried away. Carried away down the medical cosmetic path of no return. The path that leads to an unending need to attempt to discover that fountain of youth by way of any and all means necessary.

I admit by times I've thought about seeking out information on Botox and alternative methods besides your run-of-the-mill skin cream  A friend even shared with me that the time to begin it is before signs of aging are realized. She has been Botoxing since the age of 25. I swear she doesn't look a day over 20 so it sure has done the trick!  There is just something about routinely asking a technician to jab needles in my forehead and cheeks that has me a bit standoffish about this particular age defying avenue.

In my hunt to find a happy place between the minimally effective creams and the surgical treatments, I appealed to a cosmetic tech at a nearby cosmetic medical clinic for suggestions. She shone a bright light on me, inspecting every pore and crevice, on my face running her gloved hand along the epidermis as she did so. The verdict? Chemical peel! I stumbled back three steps as visions of Samantha Jones with a freshly peeled face veiling herself from the sight of all party attendees, on an episode of Sex and the City, flashed through my mindFully frying my face for the purpose of maintaining its luster and a youthful complexion was not the route I was prepared to take. I made these concerns known.

Andrea, my cosmetic medical tech, giggled and admitted that 80% of women she discusses chemical peels with, have the exact same allusion or point of reference. She also was adamant that with the appropriate tech, the charcoal look is not even a remote possibility. She assured me there would be only beneficial results with little to no side-effects. I put my face's fate in her hands and signed on for a series of peels and hydro-lifting treatments, a bit nerve-filled while signing the waiver forms, of course.

The results? Ladies, I'm a believer! Truly, there is nothing to be afraid of. Monthly, I head to a serene setting where I'm made to feel that I'm at a day spa even though for only an hour, A soothing massage is included in the process and the substances that are lathered on my face elicit nothing more than a tickling and tingling sensation. My skin has never looked healthier and trust me, from the moment I step  out of the medical cosmetic office, my day carries on as usual (no veil required). I know the term 'chemical' may be a bit off-putting, but the chemical that is used is so gentle that it's as if the substance used is an elixir with an olive oil base.

For those who are looking for a happy point in between creams and injections, the peel and hydro-lift is a spectacular option with fabulous results. The cost is reasonable, especially when bought in a package deal.  Each monthly session costs around $75. However, if you buy a package of four, the cost per session decreases by about $15.

It is definitely important to always consult a health care professional to know the risks of any procedure and to know the skill level and training of the individual who will be treating you. Do what works best for you and your skin type.

Be skin happy!

Greeted by cheering enthusiasts, Kinsella, bestselling author of the Shopaholic series and a slew of other entertaining reads, entered the overflowing room at 8705 Yonge Street in a stunning black pant suit.  Statuesque, elegant and graceful, she strode to the podium awaiting her and offered her appreciation to all in attendance, a beaming smile across her face all the while.  Her words at the podium were few, yet her melodic voice and magnetic demeanor had us all entranced and satisfied by what little was said. Immediately Kinsella invited her fans to engage with her at the signing table.

Seeing as I was one of the first to arrive at the venue this also meant I was one of the first to get to be invited up to the table for some one-on-one time.  I felt tongue-tied and in awe that the woman who has not only entertained me with her witty and charming tales but who has also been the main source of inspiration behind my debut novel, The Tantalizing Tale of a Bitter Sweetheart was sitting across from me radiating the warmest and most welcoming smile. I slid my newly purchased copy of Shopaholic to the Stars  along the table to her saying as I did so, "Thank you for visiting us, Sophie" and then flashing a smile at the Indigo staff member who was the designated photographer for the evening.

Quickly I turned to Ms. Kinsella while she was personalizing and signing the copy for me and asked, "What is your favourite part of being an author?" To which she replied, "This, of course." I smiled and added that it is obvious Toronto has much love for her and thanked her once more. Ensuring to take my book with me as I went past the never ending lineup of individuals waiting to get up close and personal with this icon of the chick lit literary world, I pinched myself, to make sure the moment was all real. I checked my phone to inspect  the quality of the picture ( not the best, but it will do) turned to the page on which Ms. Kinsella signed and reveled in the moment.

I have to say that the hours leading up to Ms. Kinsella's arrival when I was able to interact with die hard fans similar to myself,  allowed me to reflect on all of the years that her novels have seen me through. Kinsella books (as well as Madeleine Wickham books which are novels written under Kinsella's actual name) have kept me entertained and allowed for lighthearted comical escapes consistently for the past decade. Tonight was a dream come true in the life of Jessica Ashley.

I have already cracked the cover of Kinsella's newest publication Shopaholic to the Stars and have laughed out loud at least five times within the four chapters that I have read so far. A full review of the novel will be posted here once I've read it in its entirety Based on her track record, I'm sure Sophie Kinsella has managed to write another gem filled with more Becky Bloomwood blunders that will earn it a full 5 stars from this girl!

Happy reading!

Magwood

The definition of luxe vintage, Magwood showcases original and elegant pieces that are in pristine condition. Sarah Magwood's boutique on Queen West has a beautiful display of designer apparel and extravagant jewellery, some pieces dating as far back as the 1920's. From basics to statement pieces, Print will have something for any bargain hunter looking for a little retro flare to add to his/her wardrobe. The hair growth mystery. Does your hair seem to be recoiling back into your head? Well first, it's not. It's simply in need of some TLC and these tips will assist you in getting the lengthy mane of locks that you truly desire without having to go extension shopping:

Don't Over-style

Over-styling can damage your hair causing the ends to continuously break off. Using high heat straightening irons and/or curling irons constantly can be stressful for the hair especially if appropriate protecting serums are not used. Even overuse of various hairsprays, gels and mousses can have a hair-breaking and damaging effect on your locks.  Give your hair a break, girlfriend! Let it go natural and embrace the untamed mane once in awhile. If this isn't an option for you be sure to use quality heat protecting products such as Karastese Elixir, Aveda Confixor Liquid Gel, Bumble and Bumbe Tonic Lotion, Kiehl's Heat Protective Serum and of course my personal favourite, everything from the Moroccan Oil line

Give the Brushing a Rest

Ensuring to brush your hair with 100 strokes every night before bed is not going to give you perfectly glossy, photo shoot-ready hair, ladies. It's simply going to stress the scalp because it pulls hair out of the scalp if the brushing is too vigorous. When you do brush it, be sure to use a wide tooth comb , comb through only dry hair and comb sparingly.

Cleanse With the Right Products

Using the appropriate shampoos and conditioners for your hair type is crucial. Don't just go with the bottles of shampoo that only have a regular moisture level you may have found in the half-price bin at your local drugstore, if you know that your hair needs extra moisture. Saving money initially will only make you regret having that extra bit of change in your pocket when your hair becomes so brittle and dried out that only pricey hair-care treatment will get it back to where it should be. Consistent cleansing with the appropriate products for your hair type is a must. If you are unsure as to what category your hair falls under, talk to your hair care expert at your choice of salon.

Let Your Hair Down a Little

Don't stress hair with restrictive and tight styles. Tight ponytails or unnecessarily tight buns pull on the follicle and inhibit growth. Also, never use rubber bands to pull hair back. Instead of tight ponytails or buns try a loose braid style.

Don't Stress! Get Some Rest.

Not getting the appropriate rest can cause your hair growth to become stunted. Sleep helps to regenerate all bodily cells including hair cells. A lack of sleep will disallow regeneration from occurring and therefore will harm the growth of your hair as well as inhibit skin regeneration, not to mention will make you fatigued and grumpy as hell.

Eat Those Fruits and Veggies.

As well as plenty of fish, poultry and eggs! (substitute proteins for the vegans and vegetarians out there). Nourish your body with the appropriate vitamins and nutrients and you will see the difference your diet has on your hair. Vitamins C, D, A,  and E along with protein promote necessary keratin production which is critical for your hair. Appropriate keratin production is the building block of healthy hair.

Get Trimmed Regularly

No, getting your hair cut regularly will not make it grow faster from the root. This is a hair myth, but regularly going for a trim of damaged ends will halt breakage therefore allowing ends to continue growing healthily. Hair-care professionals suggest going for a trim every 6-8 weeks for best results.

In addition, steer away from chemical treatments and excessive colouring or bleaching of hair. Results may look great initially but will have a damaging effect on your mane.

Be Hair Happy!

Welcome to all things novel!

Firstly, I'd like to say how thrilled I am that Ms. Sophie Kinsella herself will be gracing our wonderful city with her presence this week. Toronto loves Sophie and we're so very excited that her Shopaholic series is continuing with her latest publication Shopaholic to the Stars.

If you have had a chance to check out my Goodreads page you probably know that Sophie Kinsella is the biggest inspiration behind my debut novel, The Tantalizing Tale of a Bitter Sweetheart and although Ms. Suzy Turner (Reviewer at Fiction Dreams) review of my novel indicated that she didn't  entirely enjoy my debut novel's genre and silliness, she still gave me the ultimate compliment when she wrote "If you like your chick lit absolutely packed full of silliness (think Shopaholic meets Bridget Jones), then this book is for you" I screeched in delight at this offered comparison because I love both of those publications so fervently.

It is therefore without question that I will be at Sophie's Wednesday evening event with my newly purchased copy of Shopaholic to the Stars in hand and I will be sure to give you coverage and a play-by-play of my fanatic experience.

What's hot in Toronto this weekend? A list of events and my choice of dining/brunching spots to check out for October 25th and 26th:

If you're gearing up for Halloween and love to get the ball rolling with a frightful congregation of the grotesque and the unsightly, then you must get zombied up for the annual Zombie Walk starting at Nathan Phillip's Square, beginning at noon and carrying on throughout the day. You will be welcomed by zombie enthusiasts and a thriller dance party. The after party will be held at the Hard Rock.  More info here http://torontozombiewalk.ca/

If you're hoping to enjoy a spectacular and refined evening on the town or a relaxed Sunday brunch, Here are my weekend pics for the best dining option and the top brunching option. Choose to hit up one or both:

Buca Toronto - http://www.buca.ca/ A truly Tuscan adventure in fine dining. Head chef Gentile fuses all things Tuscan into his mouth watering creations. If you get easily squeamish, perhaps not enlightening yourself to his methods for food preparation is a good idea. The food is delectable!

School- http://www.schooltoronto.com/ One of my personal all time favourite brunch spots in the city, School has a scrumptious spread of anything that a fantastic Sunday brunch should include. From the fluffiest stack of blueberry pancakes or if you wish to walk on the sweeter side, try their caramel coconut pancakes (to die for), to their mouth-watering smoked salmon paired with a delightful mimosa or your choice of crepes, you won't be disappointed. School on a Sunday has never been more inviting!

And in between the Saturday evening dining experience and the Sunday morning brunching, of course there are a myriad of events to check out! Here is my top pick for tonight. It's not too late:

Keeping with the theme of everything fashion for Toronto World Mastercard Fashion Week, head to Muzik to toast the end of a truly magnificent 6 day event. Doors open for the Muzik After Party at 9:30. Follow the link for more information and strut on in to take part in the celebration http://www.marketwired.com/press-release/muzik-closes-world-mastercard-fashion-week-with-amber-rose-on-october-25-1960864.htm

A change has been made, I must confess. Reveler Rhapsody Turned City Sophisticate

I love writing; I love reading; I love books; I love writing books and also love reading books. That is no surprise I'm sure to all of you lovely and loyal viewers who have tuned in to read about my publishing adventures. The first adventure has been completed, the second is well underway so I suppose I'm experiencing the sequel to my own debut.

As always intended, however, I have decided to expand this blog and branch off from the purely literature-based content to involve some more of my favourite things.Yummy food, beauty, fashion, entertainment, special events, book reviews and health and wellness will be the topics that you will begin to find touched on when visiting my blog. Please notice the new pages that have been added to the sidebar.

Why 'City Sophisticate' you ask? Well, let me be up front and say that I do not consider myself overly sophisticated. The term 'Sophisticate' is meant to highlight Toronto as a city that emanates sophistication.

This page will remain my own confessional about my own life and journey in the city that I love. Video confessionals will begin to be added weekly. Aside from what has already been added, next week you will also find coverage of  an event that makes me giddy just to think about. Sophie Kinsella, inspiration central for my debut novel, will be in Toronto! I'm attending, of course, so will have a few tidbits for you about my dream meet up.

I look forward to the new chapter that my blog is beginning and hope you all will continue to drop by.

My Creation Station

Waking up Saturday mornings bright and early, while the sun is just rising to stream through the cracks of my bedroom blinds is my most favourite part of the day and week. Monday to Friday I slump to my feet, brush my teeth, eyes half closed, attempting to tick off the items that need to get done that day at the school where I teach. My energy level remains stagnant until at least 8 a.m. then I finally have my first sip of coffee and am able to liven up for my class of cuties. On Saturdays, my schedule is wide open to do nothing but WRITE and just the thought of having an entire day to myself, interruption free, to purely put pen to paper, or I suppose fingers to keyboard, is heavenly to me.  It’s an indescribable energy that surges through me waking me as early as 6 in the morning; one that I can’t explain and one that disallows me to nod back off to sleep. I don’t even curse the early time and the fact that I’m awake. I jump up and let the energy plot my course.

That course often takes me out of my 10th floor condo and down the road to one of countless coffee shops in the vicinity of my residence. This is entirely perfect seeing as when it comes to writing, I never visit the same coffee shop twice in a row. I need a selection and a change of scenery often.  The bustle of activity that surrounds me, the rhythm of the music that gently hums throughout the selected coffee shop of the day, the sound of the frother and the glorious aromas of the delicious blends of imported and local beans, the cheerful conversations between patrons at adjacent tables to my own, these are all welcome elements and necessary for the perfect setting while creating. Silence is death to my writing, no… more like murder.

If I attempt to write at home, the only area that proves to result in productivity is the balcony off of my sitting area. On the balcony I can hear the laughter of children at the park next to my condo and in the summer see them zipping through the spraying water at the splash pad. I see people jogging by and others walking hand in hand. At times the pub down the road hires bands to play on the patio in the middle of the afternoon and I let the harmonies resulting from their creativity inspire my own.

Seeing as I am not only a writer but an educator as well, I am fortunate enough to be given a number of weeks off throughout the calendar year. These weeks usually result in me heading off on numerous trips to a variety of destinations. I must say that I tend to glean remarkable benefits due to such experiences. From the people I meet, to the new surroundings I am able to become familiar with I have come to realize that it is when I travel that I collect much of my inspiration.

I am a lively and active woman who needs activity and a buzz of energy around me when I write. If it isn’t there, I search it out, even if it means hopping a plane to find my muse.

The Makings of a Tantalizing Series: How it All Began

Half the difficulty most writers face in beginning a work, regardless of whether they intend it to be a novel, novella or short story, is finding the narrative voice for the story they wish to tell.  I have these same struggles and suppose that’s why it took me until this past year to finally publish my first novel, The Tantalizing Tale of a Bitter Sweetheart. Leading up to this year I have always been an avid writer of short stories (which I never sought to publish), articles and blogposts.  Although ideas were swirling in my mind for a women’s fiction novel, I just couldn’t find the perfect voice to carry it through.

Instead I chose to abandon the idea of writing a novel of fiction and sat down to try my hand at an autobiographical account of all of the experiences the metropolis of Toronto, Canada’s largest city, has thrown my way since moving here seven years ago. From dating falters and their hilarious and sometimes unwelcome outcomes to career hiccups and the hunt for gainful employment in a fast-paced concrete jungle, it’s been quite the rollercoaster ride. I knew I had a plethora of entertaining circumstances to recount in my writing. I pulled out my laptop and titled the work 101 Dates . I’m just going to add a bit of an aside here and let you all know that I don’t think the number is quite that high, but it sure feels like it’s an accurate estimation. To be honest the term ‘dates’ was used with a double entendre, including the typical date of companionship as well as dates on a calendar measuring the passing of time.  How very deep of me.

I began to attempt to unravel the myriad of circumstances in my head out onto the document in front of me. About two pages in I became aware that the voice of this supposed autobiography was beginning to waver to one that wasn’t even my own.  Fellow writers have always asked me whether I had ever experienced characters in my work taking on a life of their own. I quite honestly hadn’t until this point.  I now know exactly what they had been referring to.

My own experiences ignited the story but I found the narration straying and transforming into what resulted in my leading lady, Portia Delaney, hijacking my attempt at a humorous autobiography and taking it on a fictitious journey.

Once I noticed that my writing had in fact morphed into fiction, I ran with it and was over-joyed that the narrative voice I had been unable to find for so long had finally found me.  Portia’s characteristics and traits are definitely fictional, though some of her idiosyncrasies are most certainly loosely based on my own.  Her tale of setting out to make real her dream of becoming a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world while entangling herself in budding romances are also somewhat autobiographical. My career focus obviously has more to do with writing as opposed to fashion. However, our drive and determination are linked. Portia’s vivacious group of gal pals is also inspired by my own crew of besties that I have been so blessed to be surrounded by throughout my time in Toronto.

When it comes down to it, I now realize that the trick to writing is to actually WRITE. Just because you don’t have the perfect plan laid out in your head from start to finish does not mean that the plan won’t work itself out. Just put pen to paper, fingers to keyboard and write. I waited far too long to find the perfect voice for my novel. Once I abandoned the plan altogether and just went with my instinct to at least write something, what I was looking for came bounding into my mind and out onto my page, resulting in a novel that I am extremely proud of, The Tantalizing Tale of a Bitter Sweetheart.
